California has more highly rated hospitals than any other state, based on performance metrics for various common conditions and procedures, according to Healthgrades’ annual list of the top 100 hospitals released Tuesday, FierceHealthcare reports (Budryk,FierceHealthcare, 2/24).

To be eligible for consideration, hospitals had to have sufficient data to assess mortality and complication rates for at least 21 of the 32 conditions and procedures included in the Healthgrades methodology (Healthgrades release, 2/24).
Healthgrades awarded the top 5% of hospitals the Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence (Healthgrades release, 1/20).
To qualify for the 50 Best Hospitals list — which represents the top 1% of hospitals based on the Healthgrades criteria — hospitals had to receive the Distinguished Hospital Award for at least six consecutive years.
For the 100 Best Hospitals list — which represents the top 2% of hospitals based on the criteria — hospitals had to receive the Distinguished Hospital Award for at least three consecutive years (Healthgrades release, 2/24).
