Ostomy FAQs

When our Ostomy Lifestyle Specialist, Laura Cox, had surgery in 2011, she recalls not knowing where to get her questions about lifestyle with an ostomy pouch answered. She remembers feeling lost and like there needed to be a place to get Ostomy FAQs answered. She now regularly receives ostomy questions through our Ask Laura feature and our Facebook community. Feel free to ask her any ostomy-related question you have or, if you would like more than one opinion, our active Facebook community is at the ready to help!

Here are a few of the questions that readers have already asked, and that Laura has given some simple, straight-forward answers to. You won’t find any sugar-coating here, but Laura always gives a smile!

My family and I are taking a road trip. I wanted to know what accessories should be used when starting to drive or ride in a car. Should I use something to cover the stoma?

Great question! It all depends on if the seat belt is coming in contact with your stoma.

If the seat belt does not come in contact with your stoma, no additional accessories are needed. If the seat belt does come in contact, you can use a stoma guard or a seat belt cover to protect the stoma
