An experimental new gene therapy treatment is making headlines in the medical community for its remarkable results in the treatment of leukemia and bone marrow cancers. The first recipients of the experimental treatment were a handful seriously ill patients whose leukemia had failed to respond to all other available treatment options. The results were remarkably successful, leading to several more research groups successfully implementing this experimental gene therapy treatment in patients battling a variety of blood and bone marrow cancers.
In this gene therapy treatment, a patient’s own white blood cells are withdrawn, genetically altered to target cancer, then returned to the patient as a “living drug.” Read the full article by Marilynn Marchione of the Associated Press here: Gene Therapy Scores Big Wins Against Leukemia, Other Blood Cancers.
