Doctors have been writing down patient information since Hippocrates was studying for the MCAT, but that’s no longer the most efficient and effective way create and maintain records in the information age.

As Texas and the nation looks for way to improve health care while controlling costs, electronic health records are offering an opportunity to do both. Despite technological advances in other industries, many doctor offices still overflow with paper charts. Putting electronic medical records in a central database can reduce duplication of services, medical errors and the costs, both human and financial, that come with them.

But change isn’t always readily embraced, especially among groups with long-entrenched habits.  HHSC’s Medicaid-CHIP Health Information Technology team is working to get doctors and other providers on board.
