Four medical faculty members at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio will be recognized next year at the American College of Physicians annual meeting for their contributions to the health care industry.
They are:
• Marvin Forland, professor emeritus of medicine, who left the University of Chicago in 1968 to help launch the School of Medicine in San Antonio. He will be honored with the Texas Chapter Centennial Award. He was chief of renal disease and later the associate dean for clinical affairs at the medical school until his retirement in 1999.
• Ralph DeFronzo, professor of medicine and chief of diabetes at the medical school, will receive the Samuel Eichold II Memorial Award for Contributions in Diabetes. His research significantly improved the clinical management of diabetes and his work had led development of new frontline diabetes therapies such as metformin.
