Welcome to the other side! After ostomy surgery, we’re sure you have questions – maybe quite a few! Your WOCN (Wound, Ostomy, Continence Nurse) will try to help you out, but there’s only so much they can tell you and so much you can take in after such an intense experience. So take a moment. Breathe. Know that we have you covered – both Shield HealthCare and the OstomyLife community.

Not sure where to start? Not a problem. Just keep reading and feel free to click around and explore different topics. Find answers to questions you haven’t even thought of yet. We’re not going to sugar-coat the process for you – there will be difficult days. But you’re working toward getting healthy and becoming stronger. You may be on the other side of the mountain, but there is still a long road ahead. We’ll walk with you.

Of course we’ll get you through all the routine things – how to change and empty your bag, the important terms you need to know, keeping the peristomal skin at its best – but we also want to help you mentally: how to cope, what to expect from a support group and tips to help you be good to you.

You may be a temporary ostomate or have your stoma for the rest of your life. Either way, let’s make the best of this time.
