Exploring the great outdoors is a form of medicine that should be accessible to everyone. The U.S. National Park Service recognizes this and has taken steps to make sure that individuals with disabilities can enjoy the beauty of America’s national parks.

Free access to national parks for disabled individuals is called the “America the Beautiful Access Pass”. This lifetime pass provides free entry to more than 2,000 federal recreation sites, including all national parks, national forests, wildlife refuges, and more. It also covers the holder and any passengers in a personal vehicle.

The “America the Beautiful Access Pass” is available to U.S. citizens or permanent residents who have a permanent disability, regardless of the nature of the disability. Proof of disability is required when applying for the pass. Acceptable documentation includes:

  • A statement from a licensed physician
  • A document issued by a federal agency, such as the Veteran’s Administration, or a state agency
  • A document issued by the Social Security Administration

*Disclaimer – I applied for this pass when I was visiting the Arches National Park. Since I was in my disabled licensed plate vehicle, I did not have to provide any further documentation.

How to Obtain an “America the Beautiful Access Pass”

Obtaining the pass is a straightforward process. There are two ways:

  1. In-Person Application: You can obtain the Access Pass at any federal recreation site that charges an entrance fee. Simply present your proof of disability and identification, and you’ll receive your pass on the spot.
  2. Online or Mail Application: If you prefer, you can apply for the pass online or by mail. Visit the USGS Online Store to apply online or download the application form. Note that there is a $10 processing fee for online or mail applications, but the pass itself remains free. This may be a good option if you’re planning a trip in advance!

Free Access Pass Benefits

National parks have made significant strides in improving accessibility and ensuring people with disabilities can fully enjoy their time in nature. Some examples of accessibility features you can find in many national parks include:

  • Accessible Trails: Many parks offer paved or packed-gravel trails that are wheelchair-friendly, providing access to some of the most beautiful and iconic landscapes. My SmartDrive makes pushing along these pathways all the more enjoyable!
  • Accessible Visitor Centers: Most parks have visitor centers with accessible entrances, restrooms, and exhibits. It’s also a great location to learn more about the park, and beat the heat or cold!
  • Shuttle Services: Some parks provide shuttle services with accessible vehicles, allowing you to explore the park without worrying about transportation barriers.
  • Accessible Camping: Many national parks offer campsites with level ground, accessible picnic tables, and nearby accessible restrooms.

The America the Beautiful Access Pass also offers discounts on amenities, such as camping and guided tours. While they vary from park to park, it adds further value to the pass and makes the overall outdoor experience more enjoyable and affordable.

Whether you’re seeking the serenity of the mountains, the awe-inspiring views of canyons, or the tranquility of the forest, the Access Pass opens the door to a lifetime of outdoor adventures.
