Rehab Factsheet: Choosing the Right Rehabilitation Center

When the insurance well dried up, my family and I were left asking, “where to next”? We had just started seeing progress being made with my physical and occupational therapists. This was not the time to slow down or stop! My mom searched the globe for alternative places to continue my rehab, but in 1999, we did not have the access or selection we have now.

In this blog, I want to introduce you to a new platform by the  Model Systems Knowledge Translation Center and Spinal Cord Injury Model System researchers. They collaborated with United Spinal Association to publish a factsheet that “provides information about choosing an inpatient medical rehabilitation facility” after sustaining a spinal cord injury. Additionally, it was reviewed and approved by people with a spinal cord injury as well as their family members. Disclaimer – I have not used this fact sheet yet:

How to Choose the Right Rehab for You

Here are some factors to keep in mind when choosing a rehabilitation center:

  • Does the center have any areas of expertise in SCI?
  • Is the center conducive to your mode(s) of transportation?
  • Does the center have live-in options available for yourself, and/or family?
  • Will you have access to, for immediate needs/services:
    • Doctors
    • Rehab Nurses
    • Physical Therapists
    • Occupational Therapists
    • Recreation Therapists
    • Psychologists
    • Case Workers
    • Nutritionists
    • Respiratory Therapists
    • Urologists
  • Will you have access to, for ancillary needs/services:
    • In Home Care
    • Assistive Technology
    • Wheelchair Fitting
    • Vocational Services
    • Adaptive Fitness or Sports Programs
    • Peer Support Groups
    • Sexual Health
