A Guide to Managing Your Dementia/Alzheimer’s Patient presented by Barbara E. West, RN, MSN, CWOCN of Capital Nursing Education
Caring for patients or family members with dementia can be challenging. There are many aspects of dementia, even multiple types. Some types can be treated or even reversed. In this seminar, learn the difference. Also learn how to handle the common behaviors and frustrations that occur along with strategies for caring for yourself, the care giver.
Upon conclusion participants will be able to:
- List three types of behaviors common to dementia and strategies to address them
- Give three tips for communicating with someone with dementia
- The two common feelings caregivers experience when responsible for someone with dementia
- Name an organization that offers resources for caregivers of people with dementia
About Barbara E. West, RN, MSN, CWOCN
Barbara West received her Masters of Nursing at Yale University in 1993 and her Wound Ostomy Continence Certification from Emory University in 2011. She has held several positions within the Kaiser Organization, most recently working at the Kaiser Vacaville, Morse Avenue and South Sacramento in-patient facilities performing full-scope ostomy and wound care. She has also provided full-scope wound/ostomy care at the South Sacramento, Morse Avenue and Roseville outpatient clinics and is currently re-discovering the joys of foot and nail care at the Morse Ave. Ortho-Podiatry wound clinic. Barbara has 12 years’ experience in hospice, and her experience in home health includes working with patients of all ages for both UC Davis Medical Center and Sutter.
