March is National Nutrition Month®, an annual event created by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (formerly the American Dietetic Association). This year’s theme is “Get Your Plate in Shape.” Get your plate in shape by sticking to the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

Sodium

The Guideline

  • Shoot for less than 2,300 mg of sodium daily.
  • If you’re more than 51 years old or have high blood pressure, diabetes or kidney disease, limit your sodium intake to 1,500 mg daily.

The Recommendations

  • Eat fresh! Salty foods are generally packaged. Whole fresh foods are lower in sodium. Try lite salt (unless you are on a potassium restriction from your doctor).
  • Use herbs, spices, lemon, lemon pepper, black pepper and other salt-free seasonings.
