You may have already received a notice from the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) about a new program called the Texas Dual Eligible Integrated Care Project. This new program is affecting many beneficiaries who qualify for both Medicare and Medicaid coverage, known as Medi-Medi or Dual Eligible.

To help our customers through these important health care changes, Shield HealthCare has begun sending each one of our potentially impacted customers a letter outlining your choice of health plans. Our highest priority is to help you and your loved ones through this important change.

WHAT is the Texas Dual Eligible Integrated Care Project?

The state Medicaid program and the federal Medicare program have partnered to create a new program in Texas. This program is designed to improve care for Texas’ dually eligible seniors and people with disabilities by moving them into a single health plan that will coordinate all Medicare and Medicaid benefits.

WHO is affected?

This new program impacts many beneficiaries in six Texas counties: Bexar, Dallas, El Paso, Harris, Hidalgo and Tarrant counties. See below for more information about which health plans will be providing these new services.

WHEN will this happen?

The State of Texas has already begun this enrollment process. Medi-Medi beneficiaries can expect to receive the following notices in the mail from the Texas Health and Human Services Commission:

  • A first letter introducing the Texas Dual Eligible Integrated Care Project
  • A second letter providing information on your new health plan and enrollment options
  • A third letter confirming your health plan selection and alternative enrollment options
    • You can change health plans or opt-out to keep your Medicare the way it is now at any time
    • To make a change you can call (877) 782-6440
