Shield HealthCare proudly supports the autism community. During our annual “What Makes Caregiving Rewarding?” story contest, parents share their insight and inspiration about caring for a loved one with autism.
Special thanks to Texas mom, Nina R. for sharing her journey…
I’m writing to tell you how autism has completely transformed my life. At the age of two, my son was diagnosed with moderate to severe classic autism. Puzzled, my reply was this, “He has what?” I had absolutely no clue what it was. My world was turned upside down, after a brief moment of millions of why questions and a period of hopelessness and depression, I decided it was up to me to educate my self, and make a difference in the lives of those affected by the disorder. I completely went out on a limb and applied for a job as a caregiver at a worldwide known organization for individuals with autism. By the grace of God, I was able to land the position. I worked directly under doctors and ABA therapists for nearly three years. In that time I feel so blessed to have known so many unique individuals. I turned my why’s into why not’s? My cant’s into cans, and more importantly turned my son’s disability into an ability!!
As my sons primary caregiver now, I’m so thankful that God has blessed me with such a wonderful and gifted child. There truly is no other greater reward then seeing your child accomplish goals, that you were once told would never happen. A little hope and dedication goes a very long way.
