A Month to Prioritize Health and Well-being 900x600

In the medical field, March serves as a platform for various health issues, promoting wellness and raising awareness about diseases and conditions that may impact every life worldwide. In this blog, we explore some health observances and advancements – prioritizing health and furthering medical innovation.

1. National Nutrition Month
An initiative by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics that emphasizes the importance of making informed food choices and physical activity habits. This observance encourages becoming more mindful of one’s diet, focusing on balanced nutrition that contributes to overall health. With the rising prevalence of chronic conditions like obesity, diabetes, and heart disease, March serves as a reminder to take a closer look at what we put on our plates. Healthcare providers often emphasize that a healthy diet can help prevent or manage conditions, improve mental clarity, and enhance energy levels. It is an excellent time to consult with your nutritionist and dietitian about making long-term improvements in your dietary habits.

2. Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month
Colorectal cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States, but it is also one of the most preventable types. Early detection by screening, such as a colonoscopy, and education about lifestyle changes can reduce the risk. It is important to advocate for regular screenings, especially for anyone over the age of 45, as early-stage colorectal cancer often shows no symptoms. It’s especially important for those of us with neurological bowels who rely on aids to use the bathroom. Risk factors for colorectal cancer include a family history, a sedentary lifestyle, and poor dietary choices.

3. Brain Injury Awareness Month
This is an opportunity to shed light on the challenges faced by individuals and families who have sustained traumatic brain injuries (TBI) which are a leading cause of death and disability worldwide. Motor vehicle accidents, sports-related injuries, and falls are the common causes. The initiative focuses on the importance of prevention, such as wearing helmets, and rehabilitation, like Neuroskills. With advances in medical technology and research, doctors and clinicians are constantly discovering new ways to support the recovery process.

4. Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Month
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an unpredictable disease that affects the central nervous system, leading to a variety of symptoms, including fatigue, muscle weakness, and vision problems. It affects more than 2.3 million people worldwide, but recent research has led to significant advancements in treatments, including disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) that slow progression and improve quality of life.

March is a month filled with important observances in the medical field, each aiming to raise awareness, educate the public, and take action towards better health outcomes. As life unfolds throughout this month, let it serve as a reminder to take charge of our health, seek regular check-ups, and support medical research and innovations that help us lead longer healthier lives. The progress we make in the medical field today paves the way for a brighter, healthier tomorrow.

FYI- Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month is in September… Stay tuned!

With great awareness,
Aaron

I have a trip coming up and I am having trouble envisioning how I can safely and hygienically self-catheterize in a typical men’s restroom stall.

Travel can be intimidating with all the unknown variables, especially when it comes to using bathroom facilities that may be less accessible, unkempt and under-equipped. My best defense against this is a strong offense, meaning preparation!
